**Halifax Hoopers Announce Augy Jones as Head Coach and General Manager**

 

Halifax, NS – September 18, 2024 – The Halifax Hoopers are thrilled to announce the appointment of Augy Jones as the team’s new Head Coach and General Manager. Jones, a highly respected figure in the basketball community and wider community of Nova Scotia, will lead the Hoopers into an exciting chapter, bringing his extensive experience and passion for the game to Halifax.

 

Jones, a native of Halifax and member of both the Nova Scotia and St Francis Xavier University Halls of Fame, has a rich background in basketball both on and off the court. Known for his leadership, strategic thinking, and ability to develop talent, he is a perfect fit for the Hoopers as they aim to build a team that reflects the heart and spirit of the community.

Augy has a unique ability to inspire players and fans alike, and we believe he is the perfect leader for our organization.”

 

Jones has been deeply involved in basketball both as a player and coach for decades. He first made his mark in the late 1980s as a standout guard for St. Francis Xavier University (StFX). During his collegiate career, he was named Rookie of the Year in 1987 and in 1989 was an AUS All-Star. Over his five-year playing career, he helped lead the StFX team to multiple high finishes in the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) conference. He was an academic All Canadian and played for Canada on the U 19 basketball team. Following his playing career, Jones transitioned into coaching and education. He served in various coaching roles, including coaching positions with StFX and Saint Mary's Universities, head coach of the StFX women's basketball team from 2012 to 2018 and Head Coach of the Halifax Hornets MWBA professional team. 

 

Jones has remained a key figure in Halifax’s basketball and education scenes, helping to shape the community and mentor young athletes and students. His work with various institutions reflects his commitment to both sports and social-educational development. His leadership extended beyond sports, as he has been heavily involved in promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion within the Nova Scotian community through his work with the Nova Scotia government Department of Education and other institutions. He is known for his work in education focused on inclusive education and social justice. 

 

In his dual role as both Head Coach and General Manager, Jones will oversee all aspects of the team, from player acquisition and roster construction to game strategy and day-to-day basketball operations.

Jones is expected to immediately start working with the team on preparations for the upcoming season, including building the roster and implementing his coaching philosophy.
